What Is a Wildfire?
A wildfire is an unplanned, unwanted, and uncontrolled fire that
burns in a natural area such as a forest, grassland, or prairie.
These fires can start from natural causes like lightning or human
activities and spread rapidly in dry conditions.
Early Warning Signs
- Smell of smoke or hazy sky
- "Red Flag" weather warnings (low humidity, high winds)
- Sight of ash falling from the sky
Before a Wildfire (Prepare)
- Create 5 feet of defensible space around your home
- Pack an emergency "Go Bag" (masks, water, docs)
- Sign up for local community alerts
- Map out at least two evacuation routes
During a Wildfire (Stay Safe)
- Evacuate immediately if ordered
- Wear N95 masks for smoke
- Close all windows and doors
- Don't leave house lights off
- Don't wait until you see fire
- Don't block evacuation lanes
