What Is a Flood?
A flood is an overflow of water that submerges normally dry land. Floods can be caused by heavy rainfall, storm surges, rapid snowmelt, or the failure of levees or dams. They can occur within minutes or develop slowly over days and weeks.
Early Warning Signs
- Heavy or prolonged rainfall
- Rising water levels in rivers or streams
- Flash flood warnings from authorities
- Water pooling in streets or low-lying areas
Before a Flood (Prepare)
- Know your flood risk and evacuation routes
- Prepare an emergency kit with supplies
- Move valuables to higher floors
- Keep important documents in waterproof containers
- Install check valves to prevent floodwater backup
During a Flood (Stay Safe)
- Move to higher ground immediately
- Stay tuned to emergency broadcasts
- Turn off utilities if instructed
- Don't walk through moving water
- Don't drive through flooded areas
- Avoid contact with floodwater
